I have a feeling that 2018-19 will be the best school year yet. The freshman class is the largest to date with an anticipated enrollment of 170 students. We had very little attrition for the class of 2021 and the Juniors will celebrate the commencement of the Diploma Programme with their pinning ceremony next month. I know our seniors have been busy all summer finalizing college decisions and they are ready to start the application process.
The IB Programme is celebrating its 50th year in existence. I think this is a good time to remember why we are all here. What is the ultimate goal? We want to create an international mindedness that stretches far beyond the walls of Hillsborough High School. According to ibo.org, “The programme aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.” As your school counselor, I am here to support every aspect of developing the whole student. We sometimes get lost in the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives. As much as we get excited about where students go to college, or the interesting career paths they may take, it’s more important to our global society that our young men and women flourish emotionally and have high ethical standards. Without these components, the intellectual endeavors are often far less reaching. So if you wonder why we do things differently, it’s usually because we are methodically cultivating the skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, writing, or self-management) necessary to be successful, which aligns with our district’s mission of “Preparing student for life!” Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything. And please join me when I reach out to each of you to share information that will hopefully help make navigating this process a little easier. Together success is greater.
Yours in Education,
