August 1, 2010
The 2010-2011 school year is upon us. Ask yourself a few questions as the summer comes to a close . . .
- Have I completed all my summer requirements?
- Do I have my final EE (c/o '11) ready to turn in?
- Do I have all my CAS documentation for summer hours?
- Do I have everything I need to start 2010-2011 on a positive note?
- How can I get more sun and sleep in more minutes before school starts?
To our incoming class of 2014, I hope you are planning on joining us at the Northdale YMCA for our Freshmen Day on Saturday, August 14, 2010. The fun starts at 9am.
I trust you will enjoy these final weeks of summer vacation.

Tampa Bay Area Writing Project
Dr. Orr received this letter from the Young Authors & ICE Writers Directors and would like to pass it on to Parents and Students at HHS...
Dear Principals,
The Tampa Bay Area Writing Project sponsors Young Authors' camps: I.C.E. Writers’ Camps in your school’s area (see application for details). Our camp focuses on providing a safe environment for young writers to continue their growth over the summer. Students from ages 8 – 18 (grades 3rd – 12th) who LOVE writing spend two weeks learning new ways to be creative and continue their craft. We teach various new skills that will enable them to be life-long writers and consequently give them the tools to do well on their writing assessments. We have attached the application to this email in hopes that you will assist us on getting the word out to your students and staff. Last year was our 8th year of camps, and we continue to grow amazing young authors with the help of our teachers and administrators! Some of your students may have already attended!
If you have any questions regarding our camps, please contact us directly:
Jennifer Albritton at avalon242@aol.com or
Tedra Mosier Tatelbaum at ICEWriters@gmail.com.
We look forward to meeting your students!
Sincerely,
Tedra Tatelbaum, Co-Director of ICE Writers’ Camps
Jennifer Albritton, Director of Young Authors’ Camps

Congratulations to Mr. Joe Humphrey & The Red & Black
The 2008-09 Red & Black has been named a Pacemaker finalist by the National Scholastic Press Association. The Pacemaker is the highest honor given to publications -- and being a finalist is a HUGE deal. About half the schools on the list will be named Pacemaker winners at the convention in November. Only 3 from Florida made the list, by the way.
Congratulations on a job incredibly well done! We are proud of you!

Important: Semester 1 Exams Schedules !
Semester 1 exams begin on Monday, January 11, 2010.
Students will take their block 24 exam on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 12:55pm. Students with a 7th period traditional class will remain in JA until passing to 7th period at 1:59pm. be advised that on Monday, January 11, 2010, students with a full JA (Research) class block 24 will remain in JA unless they are signed out by a parent/guardian in SAO.
Starting on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, students with a full JA (Research) class for a given exam block will not be required to attend class during the exam time, however the JA classroom is the officially designated area for the student to be in if they are not under the direct supervision of their parent/guardian.
In other words, the only school sanctioned, on campus, and adult supervised area for a student to be during a full JA (Research) exam block is with the JA (Research) teacher. If a student is not in their assigned JA (Research) classroom and/or under the supervision of their JA teacher during an exam block, it is assumed the student is under the supervision of their parent and/or guardian.
In addition, there is only one exam on Wednesday, January 13, 2010. The students will be dismissed at 9:35am. The magnet buses will not come on that day until noon. Students who wait until the buses arrive at noon will be required to stay in an assigned area on campus until the busses arrive on campus. We encourage families to secure alternative transportation home on the 13th if possible.
The school day will end at the following times the week of exams:
- Monday, January 11, 2010 - 2:55pm (regular bus dismissal)
- Tuesday, January 12, 2010 - 11:45am (buses leave at noon)
- Wednesday, January 13, 2010 - 9:35am (traditional buses leave at 9:45am / magnet buses leave at noon)
- Thursday, January 14, 2010 - 11:45am (buses leave at noon)
- Friday, January 15, 2010 - 11:45am (buses leave at noon)
Good luck on exams!!!
Mr. Jones

Parent informational meeting January 28, 2010.
There will be a parent informational meeting January 28, 2010.
At 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium, Mrs. Holcombe will be presenting information about the PSAT score report that your child received on December 16, 2009. This is relevant for all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders.
At 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, Mr. Jones will address programming questions and concerns for 10th grade parents (next year’s 11th graders) that you might have for classes in the 2010/2011 school year. Programming sheets will be given to each student and are due on Thursday, February 4, 2010. This meeting is especially important for the parents of 10th graders because this is the year the student picks his/her higher and standard level courses for their IB diploma.
Running concurrently to the programming meeting, Ms. Gondek will be conducting a presentation in the auditorium for junior parents regarding the college application procedure and college scholarships.
Freshmen parents are welcome to attend either the IB programming meeting in the cafeteria or the college scholarship/application presentation in the auditorium.
We hope that you can join us on January 28th.
