Société Honoraire de Français
"L'homme qui sait deux langues en vaut deux!"
The Société Honoraire de Français, an honor society sponsored by the
American Association of Teachers of French, recognizes high achievement in French at the secondary level.
Mission Statement
The aim of this organization is to stimulate interest in the study of French, to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievements, to create enthusiasm for and an understanding of Francophone culture and civilization, to promote and perpetuate international friendship, and to reward efforts toward furthering solidarity in the French-speaking world.
French Honor Society Requirements:
- Must have maintained a 3.5 GPA in French for two years (hs)
- Must have, and maintain, a 3.0 overall GPA
One of the goals of the French Honor Society (FHS) is to recognize excellence in the French language & culture. In accordance, each year, senior FHS members who have demonstrated dedication and hard work will be eligible to apply for scholarships. An outstanding junior has the opportunity to earn the Junior Travel Award.
Book Awards are presented to 4 oustanding students: 2 seniors & 2 juniors.
Due to the change in club day scheduling, FHS meetings will either be held during "C" lunch or after school. For meeting dates and times, speak with Monsieur Shelburne or an Executive Council officer.

- Dues and Fees
- The charter fee for chapter membership is ten dollars, or as the National
Council may designate. Chapters pay the fee when applying for membership.
- The student initiation fee in the SHF, payable at the time of initiation, is $20 dollars, or as the National Council may designate. This fee is payable only once, and the initiate remains a member of the SHF as long as he/she is a French
secondary school student and maintains the academic requirements mentioned above (see 3a and 3b). The annual membership fee is $5 for the 2006-2007 school year and will become $10 with the 2007-2008 school year. The SHF Advisor, however, may exercise the prerogative to revoke a student's membership for reasons of failure to maintain a high scholastic average, of behavior inappropriate to an honor society, irregular participation in SHF activities, insufficient service hours, failure to attend the initiation ceremony, etc.
- Students must be enrolled in a French course to be an active member.
- Awards
- Upon election, candidates will be awarded a certificate of membership in the
SHF and may order pins and charms through the chapter Advisor.
- Schools having chapters may set awards of their own in addition to certificates.
- Graduating members may wear red, white and blue honor cords, available
from the SHF Executive Secretary.
- The official seal, available from SHF headquarters, may be affixed to the
student's diploma.
- Elections
- The members of the Executive Council shall be elected by plurality vote by the members of the Chapter Société, all of which must submit a paragraph stating their desire and reason(s) for being on the executive council. In addition, each member must receive the approval of the sponsor.
- There are usually 8 members of the Executive Council: five (5) seniors & three (3) juniors. The three (3) junior members will automatically remain on the council during their senior year to provide support and to aid in the transition, as well as to aid in training new members of the Executive Council.
- Chapter Activities and Member Service Hours
- The Chapter activities may include, but not be limited to, initiation
ceremonies (this is a required ceremony), Chapter meetings, participation in the
Concours Oral, caroling during the holidays, fund-raisers, and activities held in conjunction with le Cercle Français (French Club).
- Chapter members may receive service hour credit for Le Cercle Français or the SHF activities,
tutoring in French, teaching French at the elementary schools (or writing lessons for this purpose), promotion of the French language, culture in community or school, or any volunteer-work given advance acknowledgment by the Advisor. Credit will only be given to services with a focus on French.
- Chapter Status
- Each unit of the Société located in a secondary school is designated as a
chapter of the SHF. The person in charge of the chapter is the Chapter Advisor/
Sponsor.
- A chapter may be formed by the application of an AATF member to the
Executive Secretary of the SHF.
- In April/May of each year, each active chapter shall forward to the Executive
Secretary of the SHF a brief summary of the activities of the Chapter. These
summaries will form the basis of the national "Report to the Chapters" and shall
be printed in the Fall issue of L'Élan.
- A chapter which does not make an annual report or which does not submit a
list of initiates during a period of two years may be considered inactive. To regain active status, the chapter must resubmit an application accompanied by the fee set by the National Council, which shall be the same as the original charter fee.
- The National Council
- The National Council is comprised of a President, an Executive Secretary, a
Newsletter Editor and the Executive Director of the American Association of
Teachers of French. This Council is the national leadership for our Chapter and
organization, which abides by the national Constitution and By-Laws. The
Hillsborough High School Chapter Constitution and By-Laws have been derived
