Be sure to check out this article on the IB transition to high school

    Stress and the AP/IB Student

TAMPA, Fla. (Oct. 2, 2013) – For all students, the transition from middle school to high school means increased pressure and stress. A heightened version of these challenges comes with the territory for both Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) students, in particular. How else can high-achieving students hope to excel in rigorous academic programs en route to college?

Concerned parents and teachers sometimes wonder: Is the pressure too great? Is the stress too much of a strain? Might it lead to emotional meltdowns?

Two USF researchers in the College of Education wondered as well and decided to find out. In essence, they set out to determine whether participation in an accelerated curriculum increased stress and/or could be associated with psychological problems.

Based on their research, Associate Professors Shannon Suldo and Elizabeth Shaunessy-Dedrick have come to the conclusion that the demands made on AP and IB students by and large do not pose problems and, in fact, can provide some surprisingly constructive outcomes.

In a recent article in the “Journal of Advanced Academics,” they published their findings and discussed the main effects of time, gender and academic program in the context of their prior research on these students’ adjustment during the transition to high school.

Special Schedule, Monday, June 2nd- Study Day

All students (freshman, sophomores & juniors) have school on Monday, June 2nd.

In order to accommodate the high volume of students attending graduation, Monday will be Study/Tutoring Session Day. Students who come to school will be attending a teacher facilitated study session, in lieu of regularly scheduled classes. Students will be assigned to an area by grade level. We will be on a modified bell schedule.

All students will be dismissed at 11am. This provides plenty of travel time for students wishing to attend graduation. For those not attending graduation, bus transportation will be available on this day.

Parents are free to choose if their student will attend school on Monday, June 2nd. Please note there will be no academic penalty for absences on this date ONLY.

CAS OPPORTUNITY Meals on Wheels Saturday, May 31st Hurricane Season Supply Delivery

It's almost summer and June 1st will mark the start of the hurricane season! As we prepare for the season by stocking our pantries with food and water, Meals on Wheels recipients cannot leave their home to do the same. If a hurricane or major storm were to hit Tampa and volunteers were unable to deliver, our recipients would be left without the much needed food they rely on. Because of this, we need your help!

On Saturday, May 31st, I need 51 volunteers to each deliver a gallon of water and canned goods (packed in a shoe size box) to 10-15 recipients. You will meet at our 550 W. Hillsborough Avenue office anytime between 8 and 10am on May 31st to pick up the items then deliver the box of meals.

Each driver will receive a list of directions from home to home. If you are interested, please email Andrea with your area of delivery choice (South Tampa, North Tampa, East Tampa, Westchase, Town and Country, Lutz, Temple Terrace, Forest Hills) or call 813-238-8410 to RSVP.

Family and friends are welcome to ride along with you!

Not available May 31? We are also in need of the following items:

    1. 550 gallons of water- please drop off at 550 W Hillsborough Ave Tampa FL between 8am and 4pm, Monday – Friday or contact me and I will come pick up. Monetary donations are also welcomed.

    2. Packing 600 bags with a gallon of water and hurricane information on May 28 between 3pm and 6pm. Please RSVP via email at a.brogen@mowtampa.org.

    Practice AP Euro Exam Update

Words cannot express how proud I am of my students today. Out of the 121 students I have, we had 98 students show up to the Saturday AP European History Mock Exam where they took an entire exam. From the feedback I received so far, it was extremely helpful. I will have your test graded in the coming days. I also think I need to reward you more, but am not sure how!

For those that were not able to attend, we will be going over the free response sections in class.

I will post the previous two practice exams on Edsby. Please review the exams to see what topics you got wrong and any more topics I need to review in class. For those in my day 1 classes, some of you only have one or two more days with me prior to the exam because of your other AP exams. Please ensure you ask me any and all questions on Monday and Tuesday. I WANT TO HELP!

Remember, study for 20-30 minutes each day from now to the exam, Wednesday, May 14th 11:30am in the HHS Gymnasium! SHOW COLLEGES YOU ARE AWESOME!

2 Year Service Project for Rising Juniors

The Ryan Nece Foundation's Student Service Program is an amazing opportunity for rising juniors to participate in a continuing service project over their remaining two years of high school. HHS was fortunate enough to have two of our seniors, Ashton Davis & Grace Montgomery, participate in this highly selective project.

The Student Service Program is currently accepting applications for the new year! The goal is to help shape and mentor the next generation of servant leaders in our community by empowering them to impact giving in their communities.

10 Tampa Bay Area high school sophomores will be selected for the program and spend the next two years actively participating in monthly meetings, community service projects, "Paying it Forward," and an international service trip.

The application process includes noting academic achievements, community service involvement,a 750 word essay and two letters of recommendation. Deadline for Application Submission: Friday, May 16, 2014 by 5:00PM. A panel of judges will review the applications and those selected for the program will be notified by Monday, May 26, 2014. If you have any questions regarding the program, please contact Allison Gorrell, allison@ryannecefoundation.com or ph: 813.785.9249. Ready? Access the application here.

    AP EURO UPDATE

In less than three weeks (six classes), sophomores will be attacking their AP European History exam. I have focused on one or two units each week to review, spending about 20 minutes each day on reviewing the information. Students should be studying on their own as well.

My last review session is on Monday, April 28th. Please ensure the attendance on Edsby for all the review sessions is correct.

On Saturday, May 3rd 8:00am-12:30pm, I will be administering a MOCK AP Euro Exam. Students will have the privilege to complete an entire AP exam on this day. Having the model now will show students how the actual test will look and feel on May 14th so students feel fully prepared to show colleges they are ready to be one of their students. Any sophomores who plan to attend, please RSVP with me by email or sign up in my classroom.

All IB tests will be given at the Ragan Community Center 1200 E Lake Ave, Tampa, FL 33605 (813) 274-8518

Students MUST arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the IB exam start time. This would be 7:30 am for all morning tests and by 11:30 am for afternoon tests.

All AP tests will take place in the HHS Gymnasium, unless otherwise specified. Students MUST arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the AP exam start time. This would be 7:30 am for all morning tests and by 11:30 am for afternoon tests.

If you arrive after the designated time, you will forfeit your exam.

If a student has both an IB and AP test scheduled, please note that IB TESTS TAKE PRIORITY OVER AP TESTS. IF IN DOUBT, REPORT TO YOUR IB TEST. Make up or late AP testing is only allowed for those IB students who have conflicts with IB exams.

Get plenty of sleep each night and eat a good breakfast each day before testing.

Be on time and be prepared with pencils (#2 only), pens (blue or black only), Ruler or straightedge (Physics exams only), calculators ( Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics, and Statistics examinations only) using the calculator guidelines at www.collegeboard.com/ap/calculators.

    Bring a snack

Bring a sweater or jacket in case of varying room temperature

Zero cell phones allowed at the testing site. This includes during break time. Please leave your cell phone at home.

The Big Red Band Takes Top Honors at MPA

Under the direction of 14 year veteran HHS Director of Bands and Orchestra, Kim Mieder, we are so proud to share the performance ratings of the HHS Band Wind Ensemble...

Congratulations HHS Band for Earning SUPERIOR Ratings at the annual Florida School Music Association's Music Performance Assessment (MPA).

They were 39 entries and HHS was one of 15 local high school bands/ensembles to earn this highest honor in the areas of concert, sight-reading, and student conductor.

The purpose of the MPA is to provide opportunities:

  • for students and directors to perform in an environment which provides critical evaluation of its performance by noted experts in the field of band performance
  • for students and directors to perform for their peers in a formal concert setting
  • in performance which will serve as a motivational goal for students and directors
  • for students and directors to hear performances of their peers and learn from hearing those performances
  • to provide a goal which is so compelling that the preparation for attaining that goal becomes the vehicle for continued growth
  • to demonstrate students' abilities to apply musical fundamentals and concepts in an ensemble performance setting.

The 39 member wind ensemble, made up for sophomores, juniors and seniors is a subset of marching band and concert band. Collectively they are known as the "Big Red Band."

The three musical selections which were performed for the MPA include:

  • The Liberty Bell March by John Philip Sousa
  • Come Sweet Death by Bach / Reed
  • American Riversongs by LaPlante

Congratulations to Ms. Mieder, the wind ensemble and the entire Big Red Band and Go Big Red!!

Opportunity to Host Exchange Student for the 2014-2015 School Year

Study abroad will give your student the skills to lead a significant life: being a global citizen, expanding his/her understanding of social responsibility, engaging hands-on with our world, and challenging him/her with high-impact academic and co-curricular experiences outside of their comfort zone.

Parent Volunteers Needed for International Day

Monday, January 27th 10:00am-2:00pm in the gymnasium is HHS IB's 2nd Annual International Day.

This is a wonderful event in which each homeroom researches an assigned country and then prepares table displays, a cultural performance, and a food sampling for competition in each category.

International Day Coordinator, Ms. Grudic needs a few

volunteers to help with set up and judging for competitions.

If you have the time (even an hour will do) your IB Parent Alliance highly recommends volunteering for this event as it is by far one of the most fun for both the participants and the volunteers. Please sign up by email. Hope to see you there!

    2013 PSAT Results

2013 PSAT results were given to students today in homeroom. Each 9th, 10th and 11th grader received his/her score report, a flier explaining the score report and his/her test booklet. The PSAT serves as the best indicator of how students will perform on the SAT. If your student scored 50 or higher on any section, it is considered "college ready."

The score report contains helpful tools that allow students to better prepare for the SAT by providing information to identify areas of strength and areas to refine. The score report also includes a unique code to access personalized recommendations to help students prepare for their SAT more efficiently and link them to other useful information. It is highly recommended that parents and students access this website. Check out the Parent Score Report for more information on reading and interpreting your student's score report.

Checking In & Checking Up- Report Cards & Conferences

Report Cards for the 1st grading period will be distributed to students on Tuesday, November 12th.

If you're wondering just what do those different GPAs mean? Here's the answer:

Students will have a GPA for just the report card (which is other than the focus of colleges).

The overall state (unweighted GPA), tells colleges at face value how the student is doing in classes as to whether he/she is making A's or B's, etc.

An overall weighted GPA factors in bonus points for when students take honors, IB or AP classes. The weighted GPA shows the rigor of the curriculum in which the student is enrolled.

Ms. Fiallo, College Career Counselor, will be hosting a College Planning Presentation in the College Lab at 5:00 pm on conference night 11/14. Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior parents are encouraged to attend. A question and answer session for parents to discuss college applications, scholarships, and financial aid is on the agenda. Night Shyamalan (1988), Melissa Harris-Perry (1991), and Stephenie Meyer (1992), it is with great Terrier pride that Hillsborough High School International Baccalaureate Program congratulates eight seniors who earned the honor of National Merit Semifinalist for 2014:

    Teresa Chorvat

    Elizabeth Tsourakis
    Brittany Young
    Aaren Zhu

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. The National Merit Scholarship competition lasts 18 months, beginning with the PSAT in October of the junior year of high school. Students must pass several qualifying stages to become eligible for a scholarship. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the PSAT which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year. Of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. Scores in the 200's (out of 240) often qualify for recognition, but qualifying levels change annually. In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state. Of the 15,000 Finalists, about 8,000 receive Merit Scholarship awards in February. Scholarship winners represent less than 1% of the initial pool of student entrants, We wish these students much success on the SAT. Stay tuned for final results!! Congratulations Seniors and Go Big Red!
